INFECTIOUS DISEASE SPECIALISTS REPORT A HIGHER TRIAL RATE FOR FOREST/ASTRAZENECA’S CEFTAROLINE COMPARED TO INTERNISTS WHO ARE LIKELY TO BE LATE ADOPTERS OF THIS NOVEL THERAPY ACCORDING TO RESULTS FROM A NEW LAUNCHTRENDS INSTITUTIONAL STUDY

Results from a survey fielded three months after the commercial launch of Teflaro (ceftaroline) indicate that 37 percent of infectious disease specialists have prescribed Teflaro primarily for its labeled indications while only 8 percent of internists report using the drug

September 1, 2011—Exton, Penn.—Arlington Medical Resources (AMR) and BioTrends Research Group find that unaided awareness of and familiarity with Teflaro is extremely high among infectious disease (ID) specialists at three months post-launch with more than one-third of surveyed participants report having already initiated trial of Teflaro. In contrast, noticeably fewer internists are aware of Teflaro and less than 10 percent report having used the drug. In LaunchTrends®Institutional: Teflaro, AMR and BioTrends surveyed a total of 102 physicians (ID specialists and internists) about their current perceptions, early experience and anticipated future use of Teflaro. In addition, feedback around patient type, product satisfaction, obstacles to use, and promotional activities by Forest is captured.

Not surprisingly, ceftaroline’s novel MRSA activity is regarded by physicians as a key advantage in the increasingly competitive hospital antibiotics market. Moreover, among the 42 percent of physicians that report seeing a Forest representative, the most frequently cited topic of discussion regarding Teflaro is the drug’s MRSA activity. Among those physicians who have not seen a representative, the majority indicate that they would like to be called on, indicating the desire by practitioners for more information about this product.

“With the availability of ceftaroline, ID specialists were more likely than internists to indicate that their use of ceftaroline would lead to decreased usage of the three leading MRSA therapies–vancomycin, linezolid, and daptomycin” said AMR analyst Colleen Hallett. “However, the data suggests that ceftaroline’s impact on these drugs will be small as physicians report using ceftaroline in cases where current MRSA therapies are ineffective or associated with issues of safety and tolerability versus replacing the early-line use of current treatments.”

The report also finds that physicians report a high number of eligible patients for this novel therapy, both in patients with complicated skin and skin structure infections and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. Patient share projections in the next six months suggest that Teflaro usage will more than double from its current level in both labeled indications.
