Hospital Formulary Insights for Anti-Infectives: Assessing Formulary Decision-Making and Formulary Uptake of Key Brands in the United States

Hospital pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committees are the gatekeepers of physician access to anti-infectives in the hospital setting through the establishment and management of the hospital formulary. In its simplest form, a hospital formulary is a list of drugs that have been approved by the P&T committee for use in a hospital. Because formularies often provide guidelines and restrictions on drug use, they tend to have significant influence on physician prescribing behavior and patterns of antimicrobial use in the hospital setting. AMR’s Hospital Formulary Insight: Anti-Infectives study provides an in-depth view of the hospital formulary decision-making process for antibiotics and antifungal therapies. Through primary market research with hospital pharmacy directors and infectious disease specialists that sit on their hospital's P&T committee, we are able to understand the influence of cost factors, clinical factors, and product attributes on anti-infective formulary decisions. In addition, Hospital Formulary Insights provides information on the formulary and restriction status of key antibiotic and antifungal brands and why drugs are or are not included on hospital formulary.

This 30 minute webinar, being presented by Arlington Medical Resources (AMR) Vice President of Research, Danielle L. Drayton, PhD, will answer the following questions:

  • How do P&T committees manage physician access to and use of anti-infectives in the hospital setting including utilization of antimicrobial stewardship programs, clinical decision support systems, and drug approval systems?
  • What is the structure and function of hospital P&T committees? Who are the key physician specialists and hospital staff on these committees and to what degree do they influence anti-infective formulary decisions? To what extent do hospitals utilize anti-infective subcommittees as part of the formulary decision-making process?
  • To what extent do P&T committees incorporate pharmacoeconomic and cost analyses in anti-infective formulary decision-making? What antibiotic and antifungal attributes weigh most heavily in formulary decisions?
  • What specific types of formulary restrictions, beyond ID approval, are being utilized to control use of drugs for serious gram-positive infections (e.g., Pfizer’s Zyvox and Tygacil, Cubist’s Cubicin, and Theravance/Astellas’s Vibativ), drugs for gram-negative infections (i.e., carbapenems), and drugs for severe fungal infections? What are the on-formulary trends over the last 10 years for key anti-infective brands?
  • What is the formulary status of recently launched products (i.e., Forest/AstraZeneca’s Teflaro and Optimer/Cubist’s Dificid)? What proportion of hospitals has these drugs on formulary? Of those P&T committees that have reviewed these therapies for formulary inclusion, what proportion have denied adding these drugs to formulary and why? What are the key drivers that have encouraged P&T committees to add these products to formulary?
