The Demise of Anticoagulant Bridging: How Novel Agents Such As Pradaxa and Xarelto Represent a New Paradigm in Transitioning Patients From Injectable to Oral Anticoagulants

— A Webinar from Arlington Medical Resources

You are invited to attend this exclusive webinar which is based on Arlington Medical Resources’ recently launched European Anticoagulant Market Guide.

With more expensive branded anticoagulants entering a market dominated by generic oral agents like warfarin, brand teams are challenged to rationalize the higher prices of their drugs. The data in the European Anticoagulant Market Guide indicates that there is a strong cost-effectiveness argument these brands can make with hospital payers based on a paradigm shift in anticoagulant bridging. Traditionally, patients on long-term anticoagulant therapy receive an injectable formulation, followed by a bridging period where they receive both an injectable and oral, and then finally an oral agent alone. The bridging period requires longer hospital stays, more frequent lab tests and other costly measures. Novel oral agents such as Boehringer-Ingelheim’s Pradaxa and Bayer’s Xarelto become active much quicker than traditional therapy and may have made the switch from injectable agents to oral agents much faster. This switch has been inhibited by a lack of guidance on how patients should be switched from an injectable anticoagulant to a novel agent. Brand teams can use the data in the European Anticoagulant Market Guide to enhance their understanding of current practice trends and monitor the utilization of novel agents.

Arlington Medical Resources gathered 9,000 patient charts from five European countries to determine the usage patterns of anticoagulants so that clients can better understand who the consumers of their products are, determine market share of brands by line of therapy and by hospital specialty, accurately size target patient segments and better formulate clinical development strategies to address market opportunities.

This webinar, presented by Arlington Medical Resources’ Director Matthew Mahr, Pharm.D., M.B.A., will answer the following questions:

  • What is the inpatient versus outpatient opportunity for anticoagulants given after hip and knee replacement surgery? What is the distribution of patients by duration of hospital stay after surgery? What agents are patients discharged with?
  • What is the current prevalence of anticoagulant bridging? Are patients receiving Arixtra, low molecular weight heparins, or even vitamin K antagonists? How frequently do patients receive both an injectable and an oral anticoagulant for thromboprophylaxis after hip or knee replacement surgery?
  • Are prescribers in Europe using bridging with Xarelto or Pradaxa and how does this compare to what is done with traditional oral anticoagulants?
  • If apixaban and edoxaban are approved for indications such as stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, is there a potential for cost savings due the decreased need for bridging?

Dr. Mahr will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.
